The Art of Edward Ardizzone
Tuesday, 13 May 2025

There are many sources of my pride in being an Old Clayesmorian. One is the universally loved Edward Ardizzone who graced Clayesmore's classrooms 1913-18. His charming star dust falls on us all. What is the substance of that glitter? An almost unique style and line full of humour and humanity, instantly recognisable and almost always capable even as a War Artist capable of creating a smile. Many have placed him close to the greats Watteau and Daumier. Whatever. like everyone else I warm to him. So whenever there is an exhibition I am in the queue. Chris Beetle in deepest St James is a great fan and regularly holds a show, this year it is The Human Touch,The Art of Edward Ardizzone(until May 17). One again the illustrations of certain books have been released and are up for sale. When I went there had been some activity but many were not sold.

Which made me think why buy an original illustration for anything between £700 and £1500 depending on the book when you can buy the book for as little at £10. Of course the pride and visceral pleasure of owning an original appeals to those who collect great masters, autographs and Ardizzone illustrations. But let me give examples. While illustarions from Brief to Counsel by Henry Cecil go for £3500 you can buy the book for £10.

While original illustraions from Upside Down Willie go for £850 you can buy the book for £21. Again £750 buys you Ardizzone's fair picture from Growing Summer but the book costs you a more modest £12. You pays your money, you makes your choice. Don't get me wrong I do have originals, and I love our Ted, but seeing illustrations en masse made me think.
